Vintage French wooden font from the 1800s with a black varnish or lacquered surface. There is a central glass dome with the visitation of Bernadette by the Madonna in relief made from plaster or meerschaum, a soft white claylike material consisting of hydrated magnesium silicate. There is a shell shaped font bowl made of porcelain and the white points on the edges are also porcelain.
The back has some time worn damage.
It would have been used as a doorway stoup font.
It is in good condition, without cracks, just one tiny chip on the edge by the bowl at the bottom on the right.
