This is a stunning French soup tureen produced by Lunéville around the 1875 period. It is a tureen with a lid, made of ironstone, or terre de fer. The details are exquisite and the handle on the top of the lid along with the bowl handles have been beautifully and intricately designed representing an artichoke and leaf, to add that certain touch of elegance to an otherwise plain white soup tureen.
It is not snow white, more of an antique off-white.
Clearly it could be used for many things, serving pasta, serving fruit salad, or just as a pot in the kitchen to hide those knick knacks that seem to accumulate, or just as a decoration piece.
It is in good condition for its age but there are marks of previous use, worn on the rim. There are fabrication marks on the handle bases where the drying or firing of the ceramic has shrink and caused some splits. Please see all the photos carefully.
Height with lid: approx 22cm
Width, handle to handle: approx 23cm
Diameter of bowl rim: 18cm
Diameter of base: 12.5cm
